Taylor Announces Grant to Clay County Volunteer Fire Department

Washington, Feb 15 -

Western North Carolina Representative Charles Taylor announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) have awarded a grant to a WNC Fire and Rescue Company for fire prevention under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The Brasstown Volunteer Fire Department will receive a grant of $30,240.00. The grant will aid in fire prevention by allowing volunteers to teach fire safety classes in local elementary schools. The Brasstown Fire Department serves areas in both Clay and Cherokee counties.

“This is a significant investment in fire service delivery and the safety of the men and women who provide these critical fire protection services to the folks in Clay and Cherokee counties,” Congressman Taylor said. “We in the Mountains have long known that our local law enforcement and volunteer departments are not only the first, but frequently the only line of defense in case of emergency.”

Assistant fire chief Hanne Dalsemer said “This is wonderful news and will help us to increase the number of children we are able to educate about fire safety. We are grateful to Congressman Taylor for his help on our behalf.”
