Rep. Taylor to Host Workshop on Arts Grants

Washington, Aug 18 -  WNC Representative Charles Taylor will host National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Dana Gioia at an NEA grants workshop starting at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday August 29 at the Haynes Conference Center at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Enka Campus. They will speak on the importance of arts funding to the 11th District, to North Carolina, and to the nation.

Also participating in the workshop is Mary B. Regan, Executive Director of the North Carolina Arts Council, who will speak on the current state of the arts in our state.

Rep. Taylor and Chairman Gioia will also make an announcement regarding two arts organizations in the 11th District: the Asheville Art Museum and the Flat Rock Playhouse. Rob Pulleyn, Asheville Art Museum’s Board Chairman, and Dale Bartlett, Director of Development for the Flat Rock Playhouse will participate.

The workshop will be led by Tony Chauveaux, NEA Deputy Chairman for Grants and Awards, for prospective Endowment applicants in the 11th District as part of the agency’s outreach to North Carolina. The workshop is intended to help leaders of nonprofit arts organizations learn more about federal arts funding opportunities and how to apply for Arts Endowment grants.

During the grants workshop participants will learn about funding opportunities for:

• Projects that encourage and support artistic creativity, preserve our diverse cultural heritage, and make the arts more widely available in communities throughout the country.

• Projects that enable small and mid-sized organizations to extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations.

• Projects that advance learning in the arts for children and youth consistent with national, state, or local arts education standards.

There is no fee for the event, but space is limited. Reservations to attend may be made by calling (828) 251-1988.

This year, the National Endowment for the Arts marks its 40th anniversary of leadership in the arts. The NEA is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts – both new and established – bringing the arts to all Americans, and providing leadership in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Arts Endowment is the largest national funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities, and military bases. Federal funding is provided to the NEA through the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, of which Rep. Taylor is Chairman in the House of Representatives.
