House Approves U.S.-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement
July 27, 2006

Boustany Praises Benefits for U.S. Energy and Foreign Policy

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Charles W. Boustany, Jr. today praised passage of the U.S.-India Nuclear Cooperation Promotion Act of 2006 (H.R. 5682).  The agreement, approved by the House last night, ends 32 years of penalties and sanctions against India resulting from their nuclear weapons development and testing.  Boustany released the following statement upon passage of the legislation:

“It is time for the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy to work together on foreign policy and energy policy.

“In recent years, India has been a critical ally in the Global War on Terror and has proven to be a reliable, secure state when it comes to nonproliferation.  We need to build upon this relationship and newfound trust, and this bill is a critical step in deepening this cooperation.”
