Tancredo Calls Border Fence Signing Significant First Step

Calls Bush push for amnesty plan an “unhelpful fixation”

( Washington, D.C. ) – Representative Tom Tancredo (R-CO) today said of President Bush signing the bill authorizing 700 miles of fencing along ’s most porous section of border with .

“Today marks a great first step towards protecting Americans from illegal aliens and would be terrorists that look at our wide open southern border as their gateway into this country,” said Tancredo, Chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus.  “However we cannot stop at the borders edge, we must continue to make sure that U.S. Border Patrol and ICE agents have the tools and the resources they need to enforce our immigration laws at the border and inside the country.”

News reports indicate that President Bush reluctantly agreed to a ceremonial signing of the Fence Bill arguing that he is still looking forward to passing his “guest worker” plan.

Tancredo quipped, “Far be it from me to criticize an obsession, but President Bush’s unhelpful fixation in giving amnesty to 12 million illegal aliens has done nothing to help us in this debate.”
