Teddy Roosevelt

As a long time admirer of President Theodore Roosevelt, It is an honor to serve as the Member of Congress who represents the district encompassing the Sagamore National Historic site. In fact, on November, 12, 1998, I had the district privilege of joining Tweed Roosevelt, great-grandson of TR, in the Roosevelt Room of the White House as President Clinton signed legislation authorizing him to award the Congressional Medal of Honor (posthumously) to Theodore Roosevelt for his gallant action during the Spanish-American War.

As commander of the 1 st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry (the Rough Riders), Theodore Roosevelt led a charge on the spur of San Juan Hill which resulted in not only the immediate evacuation of the heavily armed and entrenched enemy but ultimately the surrender of nearly 400 years of Spanish rule over the island of Cuba. A fellow recipient of the Medal of Honor also present during the charge, Captain Robert Howze, noted that Roosevelt "displayed the most conspicuous gallantry, courage and coolness in performing an extraordinarily hazardous duty." President Clinton officially awarded President Roosevelt with the Congressional Medal of Honor at a White House ceremony on January 16, 2001.
