Abortion Clinics: Not Only Killing Centers
but Torture Centers as Well

Remarks of Rep. Chris Smith
March for Life, January 24, 2005

(Washington, DC) —  Your willingness to endure the cold and snow in this great witness for life is truly inspiring – and special thanks to Nellie Gray for her extraordinary leadership.

The pro life movement is the greatest human rights movement on earth- a struggle based on unconditional love—even for the pro abortionists—unconditional empathy for the victims, both the child and his or her mother, and unconditional courage.

We are a movement with deep hope and expectation, that with God’s powerful grace, the culture of death will be vanquished by the culture of life. We pray for the day when branding an unborn child as “unwanted” will no longer mean a death sentence in America.

With each passing year, the horrific toll on women’s lives becomes more evident.  And it’s time the media stopped censoring this truth.  Women deserve better than abortion and the compelling stories of the brave post abortive women who are silent no more need to be heard.  These very special women bear witness not only to the agony and trauma of their own abortion but to the hope of healing, reconciliation and inner peace as well.

With each passing year,  the child body count grows—since 1973 more than 46 million babies have been killed by dismemberment and chemical poisoning, a number fast approaching total worldwide deaths, civilian and military, from World War II.

And as we feared, the much touted baby pesticide, RU-486, rushed to approval by a biased FDA, is poison not only to the baby but women die as well.

And now we learn from science and medicine that due to nerve cell development,  unborn children from at least 20 weeks, and most likely even earlier, feel excruciating pain, 2-4 times more pain than you or I would feel from the same type of assault.

This week Sen. Brownback and I will again introduce legislation-- The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act-- to require in part that women seeking abortion at this stage of development be informed of this gruesome reality.

Abortion is violence against children who feel pain.

Abortion clinics are not only killing centers, but torture chambers as well.

Finally, let us pray and fast that God will inspire politicians of every political stripe including our pro- life President George Bush to be tenacious, brave, bold, and impatient, yes, impatient, in ensuring that no child, no woman, is left behind to be exploited by the abortion industry.
