Telecommunications & Technology

One of the most fast-paced and important sectors of our economy are the telecommunications and technology sector. Advancements in both telecommunications and technology have helped us bridge gaps that once existed between rural and urban areas, as well as providing jobs as the telecommunications era expands into new and different areas.

In 2004, Hinojosa voted for H.R.3717, the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2004. This important piece of legislation increases the penalties imposed for broadcast indecency and prohibits the broadcast of certain words and phrases.

In early 2005, Congress began debate on on telecommunications reform legislation.  Many issues will be discussed during this deabte, including:  access to broadband communications, a la carte cable services, high speed Internet, Net Neutrality, Voice Over Internet Protocol, and, enhanced 911 services and capabilities.

 

As a member of the Telecommunications Task Force of the Congressional Rural Caucus, Hinojosa has been working to protect the Universal Services Fund and telephone co-operatives.  The Universal Service Fund is in place to ensure that rural communities have affordable coverage and increase advanced telecommunications services.
