For many years, the veterans in the 15th Congressional District had limited access to health care and were forced to travel to Audie Murphy Hospital in San Antonio or Temple, TX for service. After bringing former Veterans Secretary Gober to visit South Texas, Congressman Hinojosa and the local veterans community were able to persuade the VA to expand outpatient services at the McAllen Veterans Clinic and to pay for most "in-patient" health care such as surgery in Rio Grande Valley hospitals.
Recently the VA released the CARES study, which calls for the creation of a new veteran clinic in Harlingen. With the expansion of the Harlingen clinic into the new RAHC building, more services will be available to local veterans. However, Congressman Hinojosa is still working to obtain a full veterans hospital for the Rio Grande Valley, and has requested funding for a new outpatient clinic in Central Texas.
Congressman Hinojosa also helped ensure that federal matching funds were available when Texas finally approved the creation of a new veterans nursing home in Edinburg, Texas and a new federal/state veteran's cemetery in Mission. These new facilities will allow thousands of South Texas veterans to remain near their friends and families.
