10/3/2006 - Gilchrest Statement on Page Scandal

We are all deeply disturbed by the recent revelations about the conduct of former Congressman Mark Foley.  I am specifically disappointed by the handling of this situation by those individuals in authority who had knowledge of these incidents. I believe that this should have been pursued aggressively and comprehensively to prevent any possible threat to a Congressional Page.

The Congressional Page Program has been an extraordinary opportunity for young people to learn first-hand about our system of government, and it has literally inspired generations of youth to dedicate their lives to public service.  I am saddened that this incident has marred that experience for a few participants, and damaged the reputation of an otherwise successful program.

I am glad that Congressman Foley has resigned and that this matter now seems to be under the level of investigation that it warrants.  Our top priority, whether a teacher, mentor, parent or Member of Congress should be to protect children.  Anyone, no matter what their position of power or influence, should lose that position if it is shown that they break that trust or fail to act to protect a threatened child.
