Chabot Helps Protect Vital Engine Program
September 26, 2006
Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) announced today that $340 million in federal funding for the critical F-136 Joint Strike Fighter competitive engine program has been restored in the Defense Appropriations Act.  The President’s FY 2007 budget had eliminated the alternate engine plan, a joint endeavor between GE-Aviation, based in Evendale, and Rolls Royce.

Chabot Writes to Energy Secretary, Attorney General to Encourage BP Investigation

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) today sent letters to Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales expressing his deepest concern over British Petroleum’s (BP) recent announcement that serious maintenance problems could disrupt oil production from its Prudhoe Bay oil field in Alaska. British Petroleum is drastically reducing, or possibly shutting down, production over what the company refers to as “unexpectedly severe corrosion” in its pipelines.

A bill sponsored by Congressman Steve Chabot that will help protect American manufacturing jobs from moving overseas, passed the House Judiciary Committee today. The Workplace Goods Job Growth and Competitiveness Act (H.R. 3509) will limit frivolous lawsuits brought against American manufacturers by creating a nationwide twelve-year “statute of repose” for durable goods used in the workplace. The bill is similar to a Chabot proposal that previously passed the House but was not considered by the Senate

Chabot Leads Historic Voting Rights Act Reauthorization

Chabot's Property Rights Bill Passes Judiciary Committee

A bipartisan property rights bill authored by Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) passed the House Judiciary Committee today. The Private Property Rights Implementation Act, H.R. 4772, will ensure that a citizen with a legitimate federal claim under the Fifth Amendment’s takings clause will have access to federal courts – the same right enjoyed by citizens claiming violations of other constitutional rights.

Chabot, Scott Introduce Legislative Remedy for African-American Farmers

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) and Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA) today introduced bipartisan legislation designed to help thousands of African-American farmers who were denied entry into the Pigford v. Glickman settlement. The legislation, the Pigford Claims Remedy Act (H.R. 5575), would allow claims previously rejected on procedural grounds to be reviewed based on merit.

Chabot Privacy Bill Passes Judiciary Committee

The House Judiciary Committee today passed a much-needed privacy bill authored by Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) and Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY).  The Federal Agency Protection of Privacy Act will better protect individual privacy rights from unwarranted government intrusion by requiring federal agencies to conduct a privacy impact assessment when issuing new rules and regulations.

Congressman Steve Chabot today offered praise to the Treasury Department for agreeing to end the three percent federal excise tax on long-distance telephone service. The tax was originally implemented over 100 years ago to fund the Spanish American War.

Chabot Blocks Tax Dollars to Tongass

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) and Congressman Robert Andrews (D-NJ) successfully offered an amendment to the Interior appropriations bill to prohibit taxpayer dollars from being used to subsidize the construction of logging roads in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska. The Chabot-Andrews Tongass Amendment passed the House of Representatives today with a bipartisan vote of 237-181.

Congressman Steve Chabot today helped lead important Voting Rights Act legislation through a mark-up by the full House Judiciary Committee, setting the stage for the historic civil rights legislation to be reauthorized for another 25 years. H.R. 9, the “Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 2006”, passed the Judiciary committee by a vote of 33-1, sending it on for consideration by the full House of Representatives.

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) has introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives urging the Bush Administration to permit official visits to the United States by high-level officeholders from Taiwan. Current U.S. policy prohibits official travel to the U.S. by Taiwan’s President, Vice-President, Foreign Minister, and Defense Minister. Chabot introduced the resolution (H. Con. Res. 381) along with Ohio Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain). Chabot and Brown, both senior members of the House International Relations Committee and its Asia-Pacific subcommittee, are co-founders and chairmen of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus.
