 Service Academy Nominations

Members of the United States Congress are asked each year to submit military academy nominations. This is to ensure that a wide range of students from across the nation attend the Academies. Each member is permitted to nominate ten outstanding individuals from his or her district for each academy. These ten nominees then compete for an appointment.  Without a doubt, the military academies are among our finest schools in our great nation. Not only do they teach academics, but instill discipline, commitment and leadership in our young Americans who attend.

As competition is very keen, it is wise for all interested persons to apply through all sources for which they are eligible and for all Academies in which they have a sincere interest. An individual may be nominated by more than one nominating authority and/or to more than one Academy. Academies look for a well-rounded person; therefore academic qualifications, test scores and leadership abilities are all weighed. Applicants must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed the 23rd birthday, must be a United States citizen, and must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependants. It is also recommended that applicants indicate an interest in as many academies as possible to increase chances of a nomination.

After a congressional nomination is made, it’s then up to the individual academies to make their final decision. When that decision comes and you have succeeded in receiving an appointment – the real test begins. You will report in the summer prior to your freshman year to begin an intensive basic training program before you begin an intense and gratifying four-year education.

Information on nomination applications can be obtained from my district offices. To request an application packet, please send a letter to:  Congressman Wayne T. Gilchrest, Attn:  Karen Willis, 315 High Street, Suite 105, Chestertown, MD  21620.  For more information on the academies themselves and other programs offered, you could visit their web sites listed below. Just click on the academy of your choice!

UPDATE FOR 2006 APPLICANTS:  Application packets will be available as of April 15, 2006.  The application process will be open from April 15th until October 15, 2006, when all completed packets are due in Congressman Gilchrest's Chestertown district office.  In the interest of fairness, no applications will be accepted after October 15, 2006.
