With 4 days until the expiration of the federal ban on Assault Weapons, U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) called President Bush to stand up to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) in calling for a vote on the ban.

With the federal ban on assault weapons expiring in six days, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) cited a poll released by the National Annenberg Election Survey stating two-thirds of Americans and 57% of gun-owners support continuing the ban.
“The poll indicates law-abiding gun-owners do not consider the federal ban on assault weapons a threat to 2nd Amendment rights, but just a common sense way to keep these killing machines out of the hands of criminals and terrorists,” said McCarthy.

“Many Police Departments will have to re-outfit their squad cars, purchase new bulletproof vests, and make other expensive preparations for the ban’s expiration,” said McCarthy. “And with the Bush budget intent on slashing grants to local police departments, the Administration is simultaneously depriving police officers of funding while making their jobs more difficult.”

“I ask everyone opposed to allowing semi-automatic weapons back into our neighborhoods to tell their member of Congress to support HR 3831, a bill to extend the current ban on assault weapons,” said McCarthy. “Without passage of this bill, criminals and terrorists will be able to purchase AK-47s, Uzis, Tec-9s, and other personal weapons of mass destruction from gun stores or via the Internet.”
