Hispanic Heritage Month -- September 15 marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month - giving the nation an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary contributions Hispanic-Americans have made to our culture, history and heritage. Their hard work, deep faith and closely-knit families have made America a better and stronger country. Economically, culturally, and politically, Latinos are an integral part of our nation.

As the fastest growing group in our country, more and more Hispanic-Americans are stepping forward to guide our country to a brighter and better future. In Congress, the influence and impact of Hispanic-Americans continue to grow as House Democrats welcome the two most recent additions to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus - Rep. John Salazar (CO) and Rep. Henry Cuellar (TX).

Hispanic-Americans also hold several crucial Congressional leadership roles. Rep. Robert Menendez (NJ) serves as the Chairman of the Democratic Caucus. Rep. Hilda Solis (CA) is Co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues as well as Chair of the Democratic Women's Working Group. Rep. Grace Napolitano (CA) leads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. And Rep. Nydia Velazquez (NY) is the Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee.

All of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’s 21 Members play an important part in the House Democrats’ mission of making the American Dream achievable for every American - regardless of their race, creed or country of origin. Hispanic Heritage Month should be a time for us to see how far we have come towards reaching that goal and what still needs to be done to get there.
