Cardin, a member of the Ways & Means Committee, has co-sponsored legislation to end the practice of hiring private debt collection agencies to collect taxes from Americans. In 2004, Congress passed legislation to privatize tax collection, a duty that had always been carried out by the Internal Revenue Service. (IRS).

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin today urged Congressional conferees working on a Medicare prescription drug legislation to drop provisions that would eliminate civil service protections of federal employees administering the drug benefit. Thirty House members joined the Congressman in signing the letter to the conferees.

Two weeks ago, the House of Representatives leadership unveiled its Medicare prescription drug plan. I voted against that bill because it fails to provide the help that America’s seniors need. It is not a guaranteed benefit, it relies solely on the private health insurance market, it has large gaps in coverage, and it prohibits government from negotiating with pharmaceutical companies to lower the cost of medicines.

WASHINGTON – Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin today joined other House members in sending a letter to President Bush criticizing his decision to halt "locality" pay increases for civilian federal employees. The President announced on Nov. 27 that "locality" pay raises for federal workers were too costly because of the war on terrorism.

The Congressman attended the White House bill signing ceremony today where President Clinton signed into law the Long Term Care Security Act, HR 4040.
