Foster Care Packages
Rep. Cardin joins Shalita Savoy, left, and Rose Callhan, right, in packing "care packages" for former foster care youths who have aged out of the system. Both Rose and Shalita were in foster care. Rep. Cardin introduced legislation that was enacted into law in 1999 to provide greater benefits to foster care youths between the ages of 18 and 21 to help them become independent and successful. Today, Shalita is a graduate of the University of Maryland, and Rose is a graduate is Kent State Univeristy and is a math teacher in Prince George's County.
Cardin Promotes Tax Credits
Rep. Cardin testified before the Ways & Means Committee to urge swift passage of the Homeownership Tax Credit and the Research & Development Tax Credit before the 109th Congress adjourns. He has co-sponsored both bills and he told the Committee that the R&D; bill would expand and make permanent research and development tax credits to spur greater economic growth. The homeownership bill would encourage construction and rehabilitation of homes for low- and moderate-income families.
Post Office Opening
Rep. Cardin joins with U.S. Postal officials and the community to celebrate the Grand Opening of the new Brooklandville Post Office. Earlier this year, the community was notified that their post office would be closed. "I am pleased that I was able to work with U.S. postal officials to ensure that the Brooklandville community has its own post office," said the Congressman.
Restoring the Bay
At a press conference at the Chesapeake Ecology Center in Annapolis, Rep. Cardin announces more than $1 million in EPA grants to 27 Maryland communities to support local efforts to clean up and improve the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
$1 Million for Bay
Rep. Cardin joins Sen. Paul Sarbanes in announcing more than $1 million from EPA for the Small Watershed Grants program to promote local stewardship of the Bay. In nine years, the Small Watershed Grants Program has provided $17.7 million in federal funds to support 544 projects throughout the Bay watershed.
First Day of School
Rep. Cardin, a graduate of Baltimore City College, greets students on the first day of school. The Congressman told students that what he learned at City College prepared him to be a U.S. Congressman. In addition to Rep. Cardin, Baltimore City College has two other alumni who are members of Congress -- Reps. Dutch Ruppersberger and Elijah Cummings.
