As the 109th Congress nears its end it is important to reflect upon the major accomplishments Congress has made in securing our nation and strengthening our economy. We are facing a critical time in our nation’s history and this Congress has reacted with resolve and real solutions to ensure the security of the American people as well as invigorate the economy to help all realize the American dream. Congress has moved in the right direction, focusing on winning the Global War on Terror, providing tax relief and fiscal accountability on government spending.

September was a very busy month in our nation’s capital and much was accomplished. I participated in numerous hearings on illegal immigration which is a problem that must be addressed immediately for the security of our nation. Twenty-two field hearings were held on immigration and border security around the country in August. The Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy, and Human Resources, on which I serve, held a hearing in Gastonia to examine the problem of illegal immigration and to investigate and explore the legislative options before Congress due to the burdens it places on American citizens.

On January 11, 1989, in his “Farewell Address to the Nation,” President Ronald Reagan proclaimed, “Common sense told us that when you put a big tax on something, the people will produce less of it. So, we cut the people’s tax rates, and the people produced more than ever before.”

Our economy is growing at a fiery pace. Last week, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 4.8 percent in the first quarter of this year. Despite having to deal with major blows like Hurricane Katrina, our country’s business investment increased at the fastest pace in 6 years, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at the highest level since January 2000.
