Veterans History Project

The North Dakota Veterans History Project is an important effort to record and preserve the stories of North Dakota's war veterans for all time. I am proud to have helped put this project in motion in North Dakota, but it is the veterans who share their stories, and the hundreds of volunteers all across the state who help gather and record those stories that are making this project such an exciting reality.

Once these interviews and histories are gathered, they will be forever preserved in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC and available on-line for review by historians, researchers and future generations. What a wonderful way to honor and remember the men and women who have protected and defended our country in times of danger.

The program was created through legislation I supported in Congress to develop a nationwide repository for veteran's interviews. The Library of Congress collects the interviews, but each state is responsible for identifying and interviewing veterans for the program. I've teamed up with officials from the State Historical Society of North Dakota, North Dakota Humanities Council and the North Dakota Veterans Administration to launch the program in North Dakota.

The project's goal is to interview every veteran in our state who wants to share his or her story. Because time is of the essence, our first priority would be to interview North Dakota's World Ward II veterans. However, the project also includes veterans of the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf wars.
