Congressman
Chris Chocola announced today that Madison Center has been awarded a
$1,379,000 grant through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s
(HUD) Section 811 program. Congressman Chocola made a formal request on behalf
of Madison Center for the awarding of this
grant in May of this year.
“Madison Center has a proven record of helping
some of our most vulnerable citizens get the treatment they need,” commented
Chocola. “I’m glad that I could assist them in expanding their service to the
citizens of the Michiana community.”
The
Section 118 program allows persons with disabilities to live as independently
as possible in the community by increasing the supply of rental housing with
the availability of supportive services. Under this program, capital advances
are made to nonprofit organizations to build, acquire, and/or rehabilitate rental
housing with supportive services for persons with disabilities that are 18
years of age or older.
Congressman
Chocola fought to help secure the funding necessary for Madison Center to construct a 14 unit
apartment community for very low-income persons with chronic mental illness. Congressman
Chocola, who serves on the board of Oaklawn Psychiatric Center, has long been an advocate
of making mental health resources available to those who need it.
“This
grant will help Madison Center provide more services to
low-income patients,” commented Chocola. “Americans with mental illnesses are
some of the most vulnerable citizens in our communities and we should do what
we can to make the best services available to those who need them.”
