Office Internship Info
Internships in the Washington,
D.C. office are available year round. A Washington
internship is a great opportunity to learn how the United States House of
Representatives operates on a day-to-day basis. Our Washington
internship program aims to provide participants with experience and knowledge
of the legislative process and the workings of a Congressional office. Washington
interns typically spend their days engaged in constituent relations,
researching legislative issues, and handling constituent mail. We also
encourage interns in the office to attend lectures, hearings and special events
on Capitol Hill.
Three different Washington
internship sessions are offered throughout the year:
Spring: January-May Applications
due by Octrober 31st.
Summer: May-August Applications
due by March 15th.
Fall: August-December Applications
due by August 31st.
Most spring and fall interns work 15-25 hours per week for
the duration of their academic semester, and our office works around their
academic commitments to set up their schedules. Summer session interns usually
work full 40-hour weeks, and we recommend that they work for at least eight
weeks within our summer session months. This allows participants to become
familiar with the staff and the Congressman and experience a variety of
situations that arise in the office and in Congress as a whole.
Our internships are unpaid, but they may be used for
academic credit at the consent of an intern’s educational institution. Housing
is available for summer session interns through a number of organizations and
universities, and we have a number of informational housing resources available
for accepted interns.
