Miller Supports Technology Incentive to Help Lower Gas Prices

Washington, DC - Today Congressman Brad Miller (NC-13) voted yes on a bill that passed in the House which will create cash prizes for advances in technology to help spur the commercial use of hydrogen energy. The measure will create competition in the private sector as an incentive to help America move away from its oil dependency. Miller, a member of the U.S. House Committee on Science, today spoke on the House floor in support of the bill that lawmakers hope will have similar results to the Ansuri X-prize, a $10 million privately funded incentive for spaceflight.

“It is urgent that we develop practical, sustainable energy sources that allow the U.S. to be energy independent without busting the budget of middle class families just trying to go to work, take the kids to school or go to the grocery store,” said Miller.

Miller called the bill, which would authorize $110 million over 10 years to create the competition prize, a good first step. He is hopeful Congress will be back soon to consider prizes for other energy sources and energy conservation.

In addition, Congressman Miller is co-sponsor of legislation that is the single biggest step toward saving consumers money at the gas pump and reducing oil dependence on foreign countries. However, the Republican House Leadership refuses to bring the bill that sets a goal of increasing fuel efficiency for cars and trucks to 33 mpg by 2015 to the floor for a vote.
