GOP Education Leaders Praise President’s Creation of Advisory Board to Boost Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Education & the Workforce Chairman John Boehner (R-OH), Select Education Subcommittee Chairman Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), and 21st Century Competitiveness Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA) today praised President Bush’s executive order creating a board within the Department of Education to advise the President on the needs of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The board will report to the President and the Secretary of Education regarding the needs of HBCUs in the areas of infrastructure, academic programs, and faculty and institutional development. It will also make recommendations on how to increase the private sector role, including the role of private foundations, in strengthening HBCUs.

Boehner, Hoekstra and McKeon issued the following statement:

“President Bush’s action today underscores the Administration’s strong support for the work and mission of America’s historically black colleges and universities.

“As the President said recently, HBCUs opened the door to knowledge in America at a time when other doors were closed, and they remain an important and vibrant part of our nation’s system of higher education.

“The President’s establishment of a permanent advisory board on the needs of HBCUs will help to ensure that these institutions have a strong voice in the Executive Branch and the full support they deserve from the federal government.”
