Under the agreement, the 21st Century Competitiveness Subcommittee will have jurisdiction over programs for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HAIs) and Tribally Controlled Colleges. The Select Education Subcommittee will retain oversight responsibility for these colleges.

            "Today's agreement is a fair and equitable resolution that satisfies the concerns of the Committee's Democratic members and ensures that the Select Education Subcommittee can proceed with bipartisan efforts to reach out to our nation's minority-serving institutions," said Boehner. "Subcommittee Chairmen Buck McKeon (R-CA) and Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) were instrumental in working with our Democratic partners to secure this agreement."

"Congresswoman Patsy Mink (D-HI), and Congressmen Major Owens (D-NY) and Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), who represented the Congressional Asian-Pacific, Black and Hispanic Caucuses at today's meeting, played key roles in finding a mutually satisfactory way to resolve this issue."

            Miller said that the Committee's Democratic members will meet next week to select subcommittee assignments.
