Bordallo offers Condolences to Senator Daniel K. Inouye

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—March 14, 2006—Washington, D.C.—

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo offered her condolences to Senator Daniel K. Inouye (HI), at the passing of his wife, Margaret Awamura Inouye from colon cancer.

“Yesterday, we lost a very special person.  Margaret Inouye was a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know her.  My heart goes out to Senator Inouye, to their son Daniel, and to the entire Inouye and Awamura families.  We will always remember Mrs. Inouye and the support she gave to the work on behalf of the people of Hawaii, the Pacific Region, and our nation.  On behalf of the people of Guam, we send our condolences during this time of loss.”

Margaret Awamura Inouye was born in Wailuku, Maui, on June 23, 1924. She worked as a speech instructor at the University of Hawaii from 1947 to 1950, during which time she met Daniel Inouye. After working in Washington at the Department of the Navy’s Bureau of Yard and Docks, Margaret returned to Hawaii to work for the University of Hawaii as an education instructor, while her husband worked for the City and County of Honolulu as a Deputy Public Prosecutor.

Ahead of her time, Margaret earned degrees from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Columbia University. During her husband’s first race for the U.S. Senate in 1962, Margaret proved an invaluable asset on the campaign trail, making hundreds of speeches on her husband’s behalf. Her grace, poise and intelligence were a constant inspiration to her husband and all others who were privileged to know her.

Mrs. Inouye is survived by her husband, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, her son Daniel K. Inouye, Jr. and her five sisters Edith Satow, Grace Murakami, Betty Higashino, Shirley Nozoe, and Patricia Tyler.
