Bordallo Now Accepting Applications for Nominations to the Service Academies for the Class of 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—October 18, 2006—Washington, DC

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo announces that her office is now accepting applications for Congressional nominations of students from Guam to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York; the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; or the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, for the Class of 2011 who will enter in June 2007.

Each year Congresswoman Bordallo nominates highly qualified students from Guam for possible admission to the service academies. The application process for a Congressional nomination from Congresswoman Bordallo is similar to applying to a college or university and admission to the academies is highly selective.

To be considered, a candidate should first write a letter requesting a nomination to: Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo, Guam District Office, Suite 107, 120 Father Duenas Avenue, Hagåtña, Guam, 96910. The candidate should then complete the remainder of the nomination application process in accordance with instructions that can be found on Congresswoman Bordallo’s Website at: http://www.house.gov/bordallo/ServiceAcademy.html.

Candidates are required to submit at least three letters of recommendation along with a personal essay to Congresswoman Bordallo. Candidates are encouraged to contact Congresswoman Bordallo's office with questions. Those who complete their full nomination application package by the November 15, 2006 deadline will subsequently undergo interviews in the Guam District Office of Congresswoman Bordallo before final determinations on nominations will be made by the Congresswoman. The final deadline for all applications is November 30, 2006.

The service academies require the candidates to have U.S. citizenship, be between the age of 17 and 23, unmarried, without dependents and not pregnant, be taking college-preparatory courses, have a solid academic record, and have taken or plan to take the ACT and SAT.

In addition to the application for a nomination from the Congresswoman, applicants must individually initiate a candidate application with the respective service academy. Each candidate’s application is reviewed by the service academy’s Admissions Office. If the candidate is initially qualified he or she will receive a Candidate Kit directly from the academy. This kit will contain further information on the process and instructions for completing the required physical fitness test and medical examination. The services recommend that candidates perform conditioning exercises regularly, as the military takes physical fitness very seriously, especially for future officers of the Armed Forces.

Prospective nominees must submit completed nomination applications to the Congresswoman’s office no later than November 30, 2006, and applicants must be attentive to all other required academy deadlines to ensure a successful application process.

Congresswoman Bordallo welcomes all requests for a nomination, but notes that the academies are highly selective; only well-rounded individuals with a solid academic background will be successful.

“I know that there are many fine young men and women on Guam who are qualified to attend the military service academies, and I urge them to work with my Guam and D.C. offices to pursue a Congressional nomination,” Bordallo said. “The military service academies are excellent military, academic and athletic institutions that offer great opportunities and I want to encourage our high school seniors to consider pursuing an academy nomination. We have had many young men and women successfully compete for an appointment to our nation’s service academies and who go on to pursue rewarding careers in the military.”
