US DOE Grants GPSS $447 Thousand in Funding for 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—October 4, 2006—Washington, DC

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded the Guam Public School System (GPSS) a total of $447,037 in grants funding.  This includes approximately $423,350 under the Territories Freely Associated with State Educational Grants Program as well as $23,687 under the Literacy and School Libraries Program. According to U.S. DOE, the grants are for 3-year and single year projects respectively.

"With the importance and value of education placed in the lives of our children and youth, it is important that our educational administrators continue to pursue any and all available funding in support of this mission" said Bordallo.  "The federal grants authorized by the Department of Education will effectively advance literacy efforts and enhance instructional opportunities for all students on Guam through improved student understanding and academic achievement."

Under project Adilantao or the progressing and improving education program proposed by GPSS, federal funds will support a professional development program designed to bridge the gap between student learning and teacher training.  Consequently the program will improve childhood literacy at the kindergarten through third grade curriculum, as well as develop leadership practices and procedures based on the use of various evaluation tools and techniques that identify areas of strengths and challenges facing school leaders.

Under the School Libraries Program, funding will improve student reading skills and academic achievement by providing students with increased access to up-to-date school library materials.  The federal grant will also support the formation of well-equipped and technologically advanced school library media centers; as well as professionally certified school library media specialists.
