Thousands attend American Cancer Society "Celebration on the Hill 2006" to support fight against cancer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—September 21, 2006—Washington, DC

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo yesterday joined over 10,000 cancer patients, survivors and their families from every state in the country on the National Mall for "Celebration on the Hill 2006." Sponsored by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network SM (ACS CAN), the event honored the memory of cancer victims, celebrated cancer survivors and urged lawmakers of Congress to make cancer a national priority again.

Dr. Ron McNinch, President of the Guam Unit of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the 2006 Guam Ambassador to the Cancer Action Network also attended the event, and joined the Congresswoman during the "Ceremony of Hope" by placing dozens of luminaria in tribute those who had succumbed to the disease and in celebration of cancer survivors from Guam.

Justice Taitague and Natasha Leon Guerrero Perez were among the many cancer victims honored by Dr. McNinch and the Congresswoman during the ceremony.

"Cancer is such a terrible disease, and the thousands of candles lit along the Capitol Reflecting Pool were a stark reminder of how many good people have been lost to it. Many of my own family, friends, and staff over the years have been killed by this disease," Bordallo said. "I said a prayer for all those who are today, still battling cancer. Attending this Ceremony of Hope has renewed my commitment to support the American Cancer Society reach its goal of defeating cancer."
