WASHINGTON—House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) today issued the following statement on Saddam Hussein being found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by the Iraqi High Tribunal:
“Today’s verdict ensures that the once brutal dictator Saddam Hussein pays the ultimate price for the suffering he has inflicted on hundreds of his own people.
“The United States and the world are safer because Saddam Hussein sits on death row, not in a palace in Baghdad plotting to harm millions of innocent Americans and Iraqis.
“The Iraqi people can celebrate knowing that with this verdict, the days of despair and brutality at the hands of Saddam and his henchmen are over. And while they will continue to face challenges ahead, today’s action by the Iraqi court is one step closer to freedom and peace for all Iraqis.”
