BOEHLERT HONORED FOR 24-YEARS OF BIPARTISANSHIP IN CONGRESS
Boehlert Receives 32 Awards in 2006 For His Work in Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. –On Saturday, November 11, 2006, the Panetta Institute for Public Policy honored U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert during a ceremony in Pebble Beach, California with the Institute's Lincoln-Jefferson Award for his commitment to working together in a bipartisan manner on issues and legislation of national and international importance.

"Partisanship is at an all time high in Washington," Boehlert said.  "Bipartisanship is the cornerstone of moderate Republicanism and the key to solving the great challenges facing our nation.  Yet moderates are not always held up as political models. Senator Eugene McCarthy once said that a moderate is someone who sees someone flailing in water 12 feet from shore, throws him 6 feet of rope, and tells him he's met him half way.  It's a great line, but it actually describes exactly what moderates don't do.  Moderates find workable solutions to solve real problems.  It's the ideologues who stand at the shore with their pre-cut pieces of rope, unwilling to adjust to the crisis laid out before them. And some would argue the patience of enlightened people ran out last Tuesday."

Each year, the Panetta Institute, founded by former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta and his wife Sylvia, present its Jefferson-Lincoln Awards to outstanding public servants who have demonstrated the highest standards of bipartisan leadership in solving our nation's problems; an independence of judgment and decision-making that symbolizes exemplary leadership; and a commitment to the nation's interest regardless of political party.  U.S. Rep. Ike Shelton (D-MO), Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Committee and Chairman designate for the 110th Congress, was also honored this year.

Other past recipients of the Jefferson-Lincoln Award include: U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME); Former Secretary of Defense William Cohen (1997-2001): U.S. Senator John Breaux (D-LA); and former U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY).
