A Grateful Nation Honors Its Veterans

Veterans Day is a time to reflect and honor the more than 25 million men and women who heeded the call of military service and sacrificed for our country.  The debt we owe to these brave Americans is immense.

For 230 years, American troops have honorably defended the ideals of this nation and positively impacted the course of history.  With strength and courage, men and women of the military services uphold the tradition of protecting our freedoms, liberating the oppressed, and defending the innocent. Through their sacrifice and bravery, our country is a beacon of freedom and - as President Reagan rightfully characterized -“the shining city upon a hill.”  On this Veterans Day, Americans should proudly honor those who sacrificed for the freedom and prosperity which we enjoy.

Our thanks, however, should not be limited to only Veterans Day. Each day, Americans can honor our veterans.  Veterans should return home and receive the gratitude of a thankful nation. Our government can also honor veterans by continuing to keep the promise to help them.  Over the past six years, Congress enacted funding increases for veteran services by 70 percent so that our veterans continue to receive the healthcare and benefits they deserve.

So that America continues the tradition of thanking the veterans who sacrificed so much, we must never forget their courage.  I urge veterans from all wars to document their stories with the Veterans History Project.  This project is a nationwide effort by the Library of Congress to collect and preserve American war veterans’ stories.  In addition to first-hand accounts from veterans, the project seeks stories from civilians who participated in defense industries or who know a veteran’s story.  To contribute your story or research the stories of other veterans, please visit: http://www.loc.gov/vets.

As we salute the members of the military who defended our freedom, let us also be mindful and pray for those who continue this effort and are confronting our adversaries abroad.  Today we are a nation at war and a new generation of Americans courageously serves our country from external threats.  Many soldiers serving are from our own communities.  We offer them our prayers and support, and pledge to always remember their service and sacrifice, just as we salute veterans of past wars who sacrificed for our country.
