Thomas Votes to Preserve the Integrity of the American Vote

Today, Congressman Bill Thomas voted in support of H.R. 4844, the Federal Election Integrity Act of 2006, which passed the House by a vote of 228-196.  If enacted, this important piece of legislation would help ensure the integrity of our elections against voter fraud.

"This bill strengthens the integrity of our electoral process by ensuring that the legal vote of an American is not cancelled out by an illegally cast vote," said Thomas.

H.R. 4844 would require voters to provide a government-issued photo ID in order to cast a ballot in person in the 2008 general election.  For votes not cast in person, a copy of a government-issued ID would be required.  Beginning in the general election in 2010, and subsequent elections thereafter, H.R. 4844 would require individuals wishing to vote in any federal election to present a government-issued photo ID (or a copy of a government-issued photo ID for voters not casting their ballot in person) that could not otherwise be obtained unless proof of U.S. citizenship was confirmed.  In addition, H.R. 4844 would provide financial help to states related to compliance with these requirements and to insure that identifications could be received by indigent voters at no cost.

H.R. 4844 will be sent to the Senate for its consideration.  If approved by the Senate, H.R. 4844 would be sent to the President for his signature.
