IRAQ

After 23 years of oppression and torture of the Iraqi people, Saddam Hussein's reign of terror is over. I am proud of the determination and skill of our armed forces, and their resolution in continuing their mission in Iraq. It is due to the bravery and perseverance of U.S. service members and their coalition allies that the tyranny of Saddam is over. I applaud our troops and President Bush for the success. Although our work in Iraq is not yet finished, our goal is ever closer. Public institutions are developing. Iraqis are taking more and more responsibility for their security and their future. On January 30, 2005, the country of Iraq held its first democratic election in decades. Having been on multiple missions to Iraq since 2003, I have witnessed the bravery of our soldiers and the true yearning of the Iraqi people for democracy. I believe these elections will help provide the basis of a stable democracy in center of the Middle East over time, prompting other countries to push for freedom and liberty for their people.
