Keeping our Borders Secure

The tragic events of September 11th, 2001 showed us that we are not immune from terrorist attacks.border security.gif As a former Nueces County Sheriff, Congressman Ortiz has a working relationship with our law enforcement community and has been working with them to advocate for adequate homeland security funding. Congressman Ortiz is very concerned with the “catch and release” policy currently being utilized by the Department of Homeland Security. This budget driven process allows undocumented immigrants that are “Other Than Mexicans” (OTMs) to travel within the United States freely until their immigration hearing.

Not only do most people fail to return for their immigration hearings, our border security personnel do not have the adequate information and equipment to ensure these immigrants aren’t on government watch lists. Congressman Ortiz testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security, and Claims last year to discuss the “catch and release” policy.

Additionally, Congressman Ortiz worked with his fellow co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Border Caucus, Congressman Bonilla, to introduce the Protect our Borders bill (HR 1196). The legislation increases the number of detention beds to hold undocumented immigrants, gives law enforcement the tools to know who they have detained, and develops a comprehensive border security strategy.

Congressman Ortiz will continue his work in Congress to ensure our Border Patrol Officers have the tools they need, our businesses aren’t being adversely impacted and our citizens are safe and secure.
