May 3, 2006 -- Mayor Bloomberg took a shot at Monday's immigration protests by saying yesterday that he didn't take part because he has a job to do.

"I was working yesterday," Bloomberg said. "People pay me $1 a year, and they have a right to expect me to work full time."

Meanwhile, in Washington, several lawmakers are pushing a congressional resolution in favor of English-only versions of The Star-Spangled Banner, Pledge of Allegiance and Oath of Allegiance by new citizens.

The proposal is in response to a new Spanish version of the national anthem. House Homeland Security Chairman Peter King (R-L.I.) said the move got a boost from the rallies.

"This has really inflamed the country," he said.
