'CRIMINAL' HILL RIPS ALIEN BILL

By GEOFF EARLE Post Correspondent

April 6, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said yesterday her efforts to aid illegal immigrants could get her locked up if a strict House Republican immigration bill were enacted.

"I realize I would be a criminal, too," she said in a speech to a Hispanic group. "My staff would be a criminal. We help people with all kinds of problems."

Clinton's hot rhetoric was actually dialed back from statements she made last month against the House-passed bill, which would make it a crime to aid illegal immigrants and a felony to be in the country illegally. She said then that the bill "would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself."

Speaking to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Clinton said yesterday the House bill played to people's "fears and insecurities."

But Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.) said Clinton was spreading misinformation, and the only way she would be a criminal under the bill is if she were a "coyote" smuggling illegal immigrants across the border.

Clinton said immigrants already here deserve an "earned path" to legal status.
