Announces Assistance to Firefighters Grants
Morgan County Department To Receive Funding

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today announced that the Neel Fire Department in Danville has been awarded a federal grant as part of the 2004 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which Congress funds with $750 million to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA).  The program=s purpose is providing fire departments the needed resources to enhance the health and safety of the public and firefighting personnel.

“Fires kill thousands of Americans every year and injure tens of thousands more,” said Congressman Aderholt. “On top of that, duty-related incidents kill about 100 firefighters each year.

“I’ve been a long time supporter of our fire departments.  Often, we don’t realize how valuable these firefighters are until we personally need their services,” added Congressman Aderholt.  “This program, through FEMA, is a way for the federal government to help these departments that are in need.  We can do our part for fire safety as well.  Every family should install smoke alarms and develop a fire safety plan to share with their children.”

Approximately 638 Alabama fire departments requested a total of $77, 327, 967 from this year’s program. Funds are released in four categories: fire operations and firefighter safety, the fire prevention programs, the emergency medical services program and the firefighting vehicle acquisition program.  The Danville department receives $61,710 to use for operations and firefighter safety related programs.

Grants will be awarded throughout the 2004 fiscal year.  “I am glad to see that Congress has once again realized the importance of this funding.  We all depend on these volunteers and are appreciative of the time and services they provide to our communities,” added Congressman Aderholt.  “I encourage all fire departments across the Fourth District to take advantage and apply for this federal program.  If anyone has any questions, they should call Jennifer Taylor in my Cullman Office and she will be glad to help them.”
