SENATE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE VOTES UNANIMOUSLY TO BEGIN FORMAL INVESTIGATION INTO CHINESE ESPIONAGE AT NUCLEAR RESEARCH LABS

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has voted this afternoon to launch a formal investigation into the possible compromise of national security and the possible transfer of significant national security information to the People's Republic of China. The vote by the committee was unanimous.

"The Senate Intelligence Committee voted unanimously to begin a formal investigation into this matter," said U.S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. "The security breaches known to the American people are only the tip of the iceberg. This problem is more serious, more widespread, and potentially more dangerous than most Americans realize. Our committee begins today the formal process of investigating this mater."

The Senate Intelligence Committee will investigate counterintelligence practices and procedures at the Department of Energy, based on issues that have emerged in the wake of the committee's closed hearing last week.
