Each spring, the U.S. House of
Representatives sponsors the Congressional Art Competition for high
school students nation-wide. The competition highlights the
important role the arts play in American society. It encourages and
recognizes the rich artistic talents of our country's youth and
gives them the opportunity to show their artistic skills. The
competition is open to multiple artistic mediums, including
photography.
The winning piece from each
Congressional district is displayed as part of a year-long national
exhibition in the Cannon Tunnel, a pedestrian walkway leading to the
United States Capitol. The winning artist and a guest are flown to
Washington, D.C., courtesy of Southwest Airlines, to attend the
unveiling reception. Congresswoman Berkley asks her competition
judges to also select 2nd and 3rd place winners. Their work is
displayed for one year in Congresswoman Berkley's Washington and Las
Vegas Congressional offices, respectively.
