Berkley Secures $55 Million in Transportation Projects for Southern Nevada

Funding for Work on Las Vegas Beltway, McCarran Airport Tower, New Transit Facility

(Washington, DC -- June 14, 2006) Continuing her on-going work to expand and improve transportation options for Southern Nevada families and visitors, Congresswoman Shelley Berkley secured approval in the House today for more than $55 million in funding for Las Vegas Valley projects as part of the FY 2007 Transportation-HUD appropriations bill.

"Southern Nevada families, our local businesses and millions of visitors to Las Vegas all depend on the Valley’s transportation network. This $55 million in federal funding will be used to continue work along the Las Vegas beltway, for air traffic control facilities at McCarran Airport, and to improve mass transit options for our commuters,” said Berkley, who serves as a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Among the projects secured by Berkley is funding for new air traffic control facilities at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas, including a new air traffic control tower for one of the world’s top 10 busiest airports.

“More than 40 million passengers traveled through McCarran Airport last year and that number is only growing with each passing day,” said Berkley. “These new air traffic facilities will keep incoming and outbound flights safe and will ensure that McCarran can continue to provide the same service that has already made our airport one of the best, and busiest, in the world,” said Berkley, a member of the House Aviation Subcommittee.

Berkley projects funded under the FY 2007 Transportation-HUD appropriations bill:

  • Air Traffic Control Facilities at McCarran Airport:
$55 million
  • Southern NV Beltway Interchanges:
$500,000
  • Las Vegas Transit Terminal (site TBD):
$350,000
  • North Las Vegas Community Recreation Center:
$100,000

(Note: facility will be located at Statz St. between Centennial and Rome)
