Medicare now offers voluntary prescription drug coverage through new private drug plans and Medicare managed care plans. Nevadans eligible to take part in the new Medicare drug program must arm themselves with the information necessary to make an informed decision about whether or not to join, and which plan best meets their needs. Most people have until May 15, 2006 to sign up for a plan before late enrollment penalties apply.

Seniors with limited incomes may be eligible for extra assistance paying for their Medicare drug plans. If a senior’s income in 2005 was less than $14,356 for an individual and $19,245 for couples they may qualify for assistance. Seniors should contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 to find out if they are eligible.

Seniors who have additional questions should contact the Nevada State Health Insurance Advisory Board at 1-800-307-4444 and/or Medicare at 1-800-Medicare.
