Other Issues - Santa Monica Airport

Santa Monica Airport

Rep. Waxman has been working closely with the City of Santa Monica, the community surrounding the Santa Monica Airport (SMO), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to address safety, noise and pollution at the airport. A particular issue of concern is the absence of a Runway Safety Area (RSA) at the airport.

Chronology

On April 5, 2006, Rep. Waxman and Rep. Jane Harman sent a letter urging FAA Administrator Marion Blakey to install Runway Safety Areas (RSAs) at both the eastern and western ends of the Santa Monica Airport. The letter was sent in response to a January 20, 2006 letter in which the FAA acknowledged the need for safety enhancements at the airport, but only specified proposed RSA changes at the western side of the runway.
