Anti-Semitism
On March 8, 2006, Rep. Waxman made a statement concerning H.R. 1053, legislation to extend permanent normal trade relations and graduate Ukraine from the conditions of the Jackson-Vanik amendment. The statement recognizes the strides Ukraine has taken on human rights issues and expresses concern about the need for stronger action against rampant anti-Semitic activities at a private university known in Ukraine as MAUP.

On May 24, 2005, Rep. Waxman sent a letter urging President Bush to raise the problem of widespread anti-Israel and anti-Semitic incitement in Palestinian media during his meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

30, 2004, Rep. Waxman, as a co-chair of the Congressional
Task Force Against Anti-Semitism, joined U.S. Helsinki Commission
Chairman Christopher H. Smith in a letter commending United
Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan for his June 21, 2004
address before the U.N.s first-ever conference devoted
entirely to the problem of anti-Semitism. Seventy-four members
of Congress signed the letter, which applauds the Secretary-Generals
strong statement about the need for international community
action against anti-Semitism and his recognition that Jews
have been alienated by decades of anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist
bias and rhetoric at the United Nations.

On April 28, 2004, Rep. Waxman, as a co-chair of the Congressional
Task Force Against Anti-Semitism, introduced H.R. 4230, the
"Global Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, a comprehensive
measure to strengthen United States efforts to monitor and
combat anti-Semitism worldwide. The bill would require stronger
State Department reporting of anti-Semitic attacks and propaganda
worldwide and calls for the creation of an office at the State
Department to monitor and coordinate US action on the issue.

On January
26, 2004, Rep. Waxman sent a letter commending the Greek government
for enacting a law to establish January 27, the day of the
liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, as a national remembrance
day for Greek Jews killed in the Holocaust.
On October 28, 2003, Rep. Waxman issued a statement condemning the
anti-Semitic remarks made by Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamad Mahathir
during his keynote address at the Islamic Summit Conference. His
statement also expressed strong support for H.Res. 409, a resolution
calling upon the international community to join the United States
in rebuking Mahathir's dangerous incitement. Text

17, 2003, Rep. Waxman and Congressional Hispanic Caucus
Chairman Ciro D. Rodriguez (D-TX) joined 28 Jewish and Hispanic
Members of Congress in a letter congratulating the Government
of Mexico on the recent passage of landmark civil rights
legislation that prohibits all forms of discrimination including
anti-Semitism.

4, 2002, Rep. Waxman was joined by 45 Members of Congress
in sending a letter urging Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak
to take immediate action against the upcoming broadcast
of "Horseman Without A Horse." The television
series is based on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion,
an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory fabricated in Czarist
Russia to scapegoat and foment violence against Jews.

by the Arab League and the Organization of the Islamic Conference
