Information for Candidates Seeking a Nomination to A United States Service Academy

Congressman Dan Lungren has invited representatives, cadets and midshipmen from the United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy, United States Air Force Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy to speak with 3rd District high school students and their parents or guardians about the educational opportunities offered by each academy.

Nomination Process

Each year Congressman Lungren selects a group of candidates for appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point.

(The U.S. Coast Guard does not accept Congressional nominations, applications must be submitted directly to the Director of Admissions, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT 06320.)

Applicants for Nomination must live in the 3rd Congressional District and meet the requirements listed below, complete an Application for Congressional Nomination and submit all necessary documents.

Reminder: Applicants must also follow the application process of the Academies which they are interested in attending.

Criteria:

  • Applicants must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed their 24th birthday by July 1 of the year of entry to an academy.
  • Applicants must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
  • Applicants must be a United States Citizen as of November 1, 2006.
  • Evaluations are based on the "whole person" concept and take into consideration your academic, leadership and physical abilities.

Your Academy Nomination File:

In order to be complete, in addition to a completed Application for Nomination, your file must contain the following:

  • Transcripts
    Applicants must provide an OFFICIAL, current transcript from the last high school attended and all college work completed if applicable. In addition, a list of any previous high school(s) attended, with school's full name and address.
  • SAT/ACT scores
    Copy of OFFICIAL SAT or ACT scores, (must be from the testing agency itself; scores on transcript or copies of scores are not sufficient). In order to have scores sent directly to Congressman Lungren's office, use SAT Code 4450. If taking the ACT, use Code 7242. The exams may be taken as many times as desired. Only the best scores will be considered. For more information on the exams and the dates they will be offered, consult your high school counselor.
  • Three letters of recommendation
    Three supporting letters of recommendation must be forwarded directly from the individual writing the reference. All must be from adults outside your immediate family.
  • One essay
    On a separate page, attach a 500 word essay that describes why you are interested in attending a service academy.
  • Resume
    Please include a resume of extracurricular activities, leadership positions held, academic and athletic awards.
  • A recent small photograph of yourself
    If you wish, you may include a photograph with your application. This is optional and entirely at your discretion.
  • Copy of birth certificate

For those wishing to attend an Academy in the 2007 school year, Applications for Nomination and above listed documents must be received in Congressman Lungren's Gold River office no later than October 20, 2006. Please mail or deliver your application and accompanying documents to::

Interviews:

Applicant interviews with Congressman Lungren's Academy Advisory Board will take place in November, 2006. Upon completion of your file, you will be notified of your interview date.

Nominations and Appointments:

Nominations will be determined using the competitive method, with all nominees submitted unranked to the Academy. The Academy will contact the candidates, evaluate each applicant and extend the final offer of appointment. This will allow equal opportunity for all nominees. If nominated, you will be notified no later than February 1, 2007. If offered an appointment, you will receive notification by May 1, 2007. If you are not selected, you may apply the following year - applicants are often selected after an additional year of preparation.
