Lungren: Pelosi-led House would weaken border security

Subcmte Chairman points to Democrat obstruction of high-priority homeland issue

(Washington D.C.)- Today, Subcommittee Chairman Dan Lungren (R-CA), remarked on the detrimental effect that a Pelosi- led Democrat majority could have on our nation’s border security efforts.

“Republicans in Congress have continually delivered innovative ideas and enacted tough legislation to strengthen the security of our homeland, while the Democratic leadership has repeatedly been soft on the issue,” Lungren said.  “Nancy Pelosi and her liberal allies have consistently stood in the way of important border security reforms.  As long as our borders are not secure, American lives are at stake—yet Democratic leadership has consistently put politics and their liberal agenda ahead of the security of the American people.”

The former California Attorney General noted that most house Democrats- following the direction of their leadership- opposed two prominent border security measures: H.R. 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act, passed by the House in December 2005; and H.R. 6061, the Secure Fence Act of 2006, passed by Congress in September.

Lungren, who authored H.R. 4437, explained that the bill takes steps to ensure terrorists cannot enter the United States illegally through enhanced border security measures and ends the dangerous “catch and release” practice along the southwest border, among other important reforms.  Yet 164 House Democrats voted against this legislation.

Additionally, he noted that 131 House Democrats voted against the Secure Fence Act of 2006, an emergency measure that would mandate operational control of all borders and ports through enhanced Border Patrol operations, physical barriers, and state-of-the-art technology along the southwest border, including reinforced fencing.

“When it comes to improving border security and protecting the American people, I think the record speaks for itself,” Lungren said. “There is a clear choice here – a Republican Majority that is tough on homeland security, ready to take the necessary action to protect our nation and prevent another terrorist attack, or Democratic leadership that has a long history of voting against measures that increase the safety of the American people.”
