CONGRESSMAN BOUCHER ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR WHITETOP PUBLIC LIBRARY

$50,000 Federal Grant Will Purchase New Library Equipment and Help Launch E-Commerce Initiative

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Representative Rick Boucher announced today that, at his urging, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, through its Rural Development Agency, is providing a federal grant in the amount of $50,000 to the Whitetop Library for the purchase of new furniture, shelving, and computers. The new equipment will enable the Library to offer e-commerce classes for small businesses and will help furnish the new library building. "This provision of federal funding will be of great benefit for users of the Whitetop Library and area residents," Boucher said.

With the benefit of the federal funds announced today the Whitetop Library will purchase ten computers, as well as furniture and shelving for their new building. The new computers will allow the Whitetop Library to offer e-commerce classes, at no cost, to perspective and current small business owners. Individuals will learn how to design and run a website for their businesses and will become familiar with other computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Explorer. The library will also host the newly designed websites at no cost. A $25,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant awarded earlier this year will also help fund the e-commerce initiative.

The federal grant will also be used to purchase new shelving for books as well as furniture such as study tables and chairs for both the adult and children's reading area.

"I am pleased that the federal government has awarded this funding to help the Whitetop Library further enhance the services they provide to the community, and launch an innovative new program which encourage small business growth in our area," Boucher concluded.

Earlier this month, Congressman Boucher was named Library Journal's Politician of the Year for his strong support of academic, research, and public libraries. He is an architect of federal law and policy on information technology, the Internet, copyright, and intellectual property and has lead the effort to protect the access rights of libraries and users.
