Hurricane Relief Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States on August 29, 2005, causing the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. The city of New Orleans was flooded, critical infrastructure was destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people were dislocated and more than 1,300 people were killed. The area needs help as it struggles to recover. The Bush administration has failed to provide leadership, instead proposing cuts to the wages of workers trying to rebuild the affected area. House Democrats forced the President to overturn this decision, and are working to help families, students, schools and colleges to rebound from this disaster.
