On the House Floor

This week, the House passed the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for the Fiscal Year 2006. This bill provides nearly $17 billion for food and drug safety, nutritional programs for women, infants, and children, and support for farmers, ranchers, and rural communities.

PBS Propaganda

Most Americans find that “safe sex” education programs loudly touted by liberals merely produce younger, sexually-active teens that end up contributing to disheartening statistics. I believe the only foolproof way to protect America’s teens from the perils of sexual promiscuity is to educate them about abstinence. Only by abstaining from sex can a teenager completely avoid the risk of an unwanted pregnancy or the contraction and spread of a sexually transmitted disease. This fact is undisputed. Regardless of how “safe” the sex is, there are still very real risks associated with it – risks that teenagers should not have to face. As a parent, I find it disconcerting that our children must face these pressures from their peers. But I find it beyond reason that taxpayers are being forced to pay for a television movie that applies the same sexual peer pressure on our kids.

The taxpayer-funded-station, PBS, is currently running advertisements for a movie it produced called, “The Education of Shelby Knox.” The movie is about a 15-year-old self-described “good Southern Baptist girl” from Lubbock, Texas, who had originally pledged abstinence until marriage. Using a character that many young girls will relate to, PBS’s movie will show how Shelby has traded in her “no sex until marriage” pledge to become an advocate for contraception and condom use. Rather than telling her peers to avoid irresponsible sex, this young girl does not discourage sexual activity as long as “protection” is used. This slick form of “education” on the part of PBS is nothing more than peer-pressure propaganda – Hollywood style. And if you’re not already outraged enough, the program was also funded by a grant from the Playboy Foundation! The American taxpayer is being forced to push a culture of sexual promiscuity, one that is literally being encouraged by Hugh Hefner himself, on its teenagers. With this movie, PBS has shown its true colors. The taxpayer should not be forced to pay for this station’s liberal campaign against the innocence of our youth.

Abortion Myth Debunked

In recent months, we’ve heard several liberal politicians promoting the myth that the number of abortions has increased since President Bush was elected. For example, Democrat National Committee Chairman Howard Dean was recently quoted on NBC’s “Meet the Press” as saying that “abortions have gone up 25 percent since George Bush was President.” Senator Hillary Clinton said on CNN that “during the Clinton Administration, abortions went down, and they’ve gone back up under the Bush Administration.” Democrats created this myth during the last election but it’s been getting new traction recently. It seems pro-abortion politicians have found that this myth provides a convenient excuse for their sick policies that allow unborn children to be aborted at any stage of development for any reason.

However, a recent analysis of a study done on 43 states shows that just the opposite is true. Abortion rates nationwide actually dropped in both 2001 and 2002. The most interesting part of this story is that, while the recent analysis was done by the Annenberg Political Fact Check, the actual study itself was done by the Alan Guttmacher Institute – the research arm of Planned Parenthood! No wonder the lefties are spouting this lie every chance they get. Without facts to back it up, liberals are hoping that repetition will take the place of truth.
