Children, Families and Workers Will Be Committee's First Priority

The first three priorities for the House Education and Workforce Committee in the 110th Congress will be to increase the national minimum wage, reauthorize the No Child Left Behind Act, and make college more affordable. "We will work to ensure not only that the economy grows, but that all families benefit from it," Rep. Miller said. Democrats Call for New Investment in School Construction
On July 27, 2006, Representatives Chandler, Miller and Woolsey announced new legislation to provide $32 billion in matching grants and low-cost loans to help schools make much-needed repairs and renovations and build new facilities. Despite a 1999 U.S. Department of Education revelation that seventy-five percent of U.S. schools were in various stages of disrepair, the Bush administration has provided almost no direct aid to help states and schools pay for school construction and repair.
