Congressman Gresham Barrett wants secure borders

Washington, DC – In Congress today, Congressman Gresham Barrett (SC, 03) will vote in favor of three pieces of legislation the U.S. House of Representatives will bring to the floor for consideration that will focus on border security. If passed, the three bills; (H.R. 6095) The Immigrant Law Enforcement Act; (H.R. 6094) The Community Protection Act; and (H.R. 4830) Border Tunnel Prevention Act, will enhance border security, strengthen enforcement and ensure the safety of the American people. These bills share a common initiative with (H.R. 6061) The Secure Fence Act passed last week by the House to strengthen operational control of all borders and ports through additional physical barriers and fencing.

“The American people want their borders secure.  By passing these three bills today, we can make an immediate impact in securing our borders and securing our nation,” said Barrett.  “Through increased enforcement efforts along our borders, we have seen a sizeable decrease in the number of illegal immigrants crossing our borders over the past several months, but there is more work to be done.”

Brief summaries of the proposed legislation follows:

(H.R. 6095) The Immigrant Law Enforcement Act of 2006 to affirm the inherent authority of State and local law enforcement to assist in the enforcement of immigration laws, to provide for effective prosecution of alien smugglers, and to reform immigration litigation procedures. It also helps close loopholes that have hurt the Department of Homeland Security’s ability to enforce immigration laws like “catch and return.”

(H.R. 6094) The Community Protection Act to restore the Secretary of Homeland Security’s authority to detain dangerous aliens to ensure the removal of deportable criminal aliens and combat alien gang crime.

(H.R. 4830) Border Tunnel Prevention Act of 2006 focuses on stopping illegal entry along the border by establishing penalties for border tunnels, prosecuting smuggling offenders and removing criminal illegal immigrants who are not permanent residents and are otherwise ineligible for relief.
