WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Republican Conference Secretary John T. Doolittle (R-Roseville) today said the attack on Christmas has twisted America’s favorite holiday beyond recognition and that Congress should stand up and defend the Christmas season celebrated by the vast majority of Americans.

In response to the attack on Christmas, Doolittle has co-sponsored a resolution (H. Res. 579) that says the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected and that references to Christmas should be supported.

According to a recent poll, 96 percent of Americans celebrate Christmas.

“This Christmas season, the Grinch who stole Christmas is being played by aggressive, politically-correct activists who have hijacked America’s favorite celebration and replaced it with a generic holiday that stands for nothing and celebrates anything,” Doolittle said.

“The endangered species list has grown this year to include both religious and secular symbols cherished by Americans including the nativity, Santa Claus, Christmas trees, candy canes, and Christmas carols. 

“The attack on Christmas lies in an unfounded argument that says celebrating this holiday is a violation of the separation of church and state.  To say the First Amendment prohibits any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialogue is a gross misinterpretation of the Founders intent and is unsupported by the U.S. Constitution.

“This is why I have co-sponsored a resolution that says Congress should protect the symbols and traditions of Christmas and that references to Christmas should be supported,” Doolittle concluded. 

U.S. Rep. John T. Doolittle has served in the House of Representatives since 1991.  As Secretary of the House Republican Conference, he is an elected member of the House Republican Leadership.  Doolittle represents California’s 4th Congressional District and serves on the Appropriations Committee, Energy and Water, Agriculture, and Interior Subcommittees, and the House Administration Committee.
