Native American Issues

As a member of the Native American Caucus, a member of the House of Representatives Committee on Resources, and an advocate for the Native American community, Congressman Baca is working hard in Congress to support Native Americans. He is proud of a 100% voting record on Native American issues in the 108^th Congress. He continues to fight to preserve Native American sovereignty, and stands with the tribes as they make decisions about their futures.

Tribal sovereignty
Congressman Baca has supported the rights of Native American sovereignty since he was elected to the California State Legislature. He supports numerous pieces of legislation that will allow tribes to maintain control of their sacred lands. He believes that tribes must be able to enter into partnerships with local, state and federal government so that all people can achieve their dreams.

Recognizing Native American Contributions
Congressman Baca has introduced legislation to declare a legal public holiday in recognition of the contributions Native Americans have made to our country. H.Res 168 would also instruct schools to teach children about the role of Native Americans in American history and culture. Finally, the bill would require schools to lead community service projects to further that education.

Ending Health Care Disparities for Native Americans
Congressman Baca is a co-sponsor of H.R. 2440, the Indian Health Care Improvement Act Amendments of 2003. This bill will end the health disparities that exist for Native Americans, who are over 2 times as likely to suffer from diabetes as other Americans are.

Native Americans and the environment
He also strongly supported the Tribal Forest Protection Act that was signed into law on July 22, 2004. The Tribal Forest Protection Act allows tribal governments and the U.S. government to work together to make our forests safer by reducing hazardous fuels in National Forests and other federal lands near reservations. This legislation will help prevent wildfire damage as occurred in 2003.
